Au tournant des années 1970, lors des grandes mutations de l’aménagement du territoire et des opérations d’infrastructures, Joachim Bonnemaison et Alain Sabatier réalisent ensemble une commande photographique sur l’environnement urbain en France et dans le Bénélux.

L’expérience visuelle d’Alain Sabatier écarte le côté spectaculaire de ces réalisations. La tendance à l’uniformisation de l’espace public est ici recueillie dans une certaine neutralité, sans tension excessive entre documentation et construction esthétique.

Bien qu’effectué en 1971, il présente ici un reportage qui semble artistiquement très proche de la photographie documentaire contemporaine.

Dans les années à venir, il prolongera en noir et blanc la même vision réfléchie entre histoire et paysage urbain.

At the start of the 1970s, when major changes were taking place in town and country planning and infrastructure operations, Joachim Bonnemaison and Alain Sabatier joined forces in response to an order for photographs of the urban environment in France and in the Benelux countries.

Alain Sabatier’s visual experience completely removes all drama from these photographs. The trend towards standardization of public spaces is recorded here with a degree of neutrality, avoiding excessive tension between documentation and aesthetic structure.Although the series was produced in 1971, in it he presents a report that appears to be artistically very close to contemporary documentary photography.

In the following years, he continued to work in black and white on the same thoughtful view between history and the urban landscape.
